Core Efficacy and Mechanism of Action

  • Promotes EPO Secretion: This medication is a HIF-PH inhibitor that stimulates the cat's own kidneys to produce erythropoietin (EPO).
  • Stimulates Bone Marrow Hematopoiesis: By increasing EPO levels in the body, it promotes the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.
  • Improves Iron Utilization: Studies show that it mobilizes stored iron in the body and promotes intestinal iron absorption, which helps utilize hematopoietic raw materials.

Common Side Effects and Precautions

  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms: The most common side effects include vomiting and a loss of appetite.
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring: Some cats may develop hypertension or hyperviscosity (thickened blood) due to a rapid increase in red blood cells. Regular follow-up visits for blood pressure and blood tests are necessary.
  • Conditional Approval: This status indicates that the drug has been proven safe and has a reasonable expected efficacy, but it must still be used under close veterinary supervision and by prescription.
