Cardalis is an FDA-approved, prescription-only combination medication used to manage congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs, typically caused by chronic degenerative valvular disease. It combines two active heart medications into a single beef-flavored chewable tablet.

Active Ingredients & How They Work

  • Cardalis targets the canine cardiovascular system through a dual-action mechanism:
  • Benazepril Hydrochloride: An ACE inhibitor that dilates blood vessels, helping to reduce blood pressure and decrease fluid retention.
    Spironolactone: A potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist that prevents the dangerous stiffening and thickening (fibrosis) of heart tissues.

 

Available Dosages & Strengths
The medication comes in three color-coded, oblong, half-scored tablet sizes:

  • Small Dogs: 2.5 mg benazepril / 20 mg spironolactone
  • Medium Dogs: 5 mg benazepril / 40 mg spironolactone
  • Large Dogs: 10 mg benazepril / 80 mg spironolactone

 

Administration & Usage Guidelines

  • With Food: Cardalis must be administered with food or directly before their main meal to ensure correct absorption.
  • Frequency: It is given once daily and is typically prescribed as a lifelong treatment.
  • Fresh Water: Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh drinking water.

 

Side Effects & Contraindications

While generally well-tolerated, pet owners should watch for common adverse effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, and temporary urinary incontinence.
  • Contraindications: Do not use in pregnant, lactating, breeding, or growing dogs.
  • Do not use in dogs with Addison’s disease, high potassium levels, or severe kidney problems.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid administering alongside NSAIDs (painkillers) in dogs with pre-existing kidney issues.
