How It Works & Mechanism of Action
Laverdia®-CA1 is a selective inhibitor of nuclear export (SINE):
- Targeted inhibition: It selectively binds to and inhibits the CRM1/XPO1 transport protein within cells.
- Cancer cell destruction: By preventing tumor suppressor proteins from leaving the nucleus of cancer cells, it forces these protective proteins to remain where they can induce apoptosis (cell death) in lymphoma cells, thereby slowing cancer growth and spread.
How to use and Warnings
- At-home oral care: The greatest advantage of this drug is that owners can administer it orally at home under veterinary guidance, reducing the stress of frequent clinic visits for intravenous chemotherapy.
- Dosing frequency: Administered orally twice weekly, with at least 72 hours between doses (e.g., every Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday).
- Don't offer in empty stomach: The medication must be given immediately after feeding.
- Monitoring: Your vet will require regularly checkups to adjust dosages or pause treatment based on how your dog tolerates the drug.
Important Safety Handling and Warnings
Because Laverdia is a chemotherapy agent, humans must practice strict safety habits when managing it:
- Wear gloves: You must wear disposable, chemotherapy-resistant latex gloves when handling the tablets, touching the dog's food or water bowls, or cleaning up bodily waste (feces, urine, vomit, and saliva).
- Protection period: The dog's waste contains drug residues during treatment and for 3 days after discontinuing the medication, requiring continuous glove use for cleanup.
- Waste Disposal: Seal all cleaning paper towels and pet waste inside a separate plastic bag before throwing it in the household trash. Wash soiled bedding or laundry completely separate from human clothing.
- Licking: Avoid skin contact and do not let your pet lick you for at least the first hour after they ingest the tablet.
