Because these conditions are typically chronic, Optimmune® usually requires consistent, lifelong administration to prevent the recurrence of symptoms and protect your dog's vision.

Primary Uses

  • Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS / "Dry Eye"): Optimmune® stops the dog's immune system from attacking its own tear glands. This stimulates the glands to resume natural tear production.
  • Chronic Superficial Keratitis ("Pannus"): It reduces the immune-mediated inflammation, scarring, and pigment deployment across the cornea.
  • Plasmacytic Infiltration ("Plasmoma"): It manages immune-related inflammatory cells affecting the third eyelid.

Potential Side Effects

  • Mild local irritation: Redness, stinging, watery eyes, or temporary blinking/squinting may occur during the first few days of starting treatment.
  • Periocular hair loss: If excess ointment frequently overflows onto the surrounding skin, it can cause lid inflammation or mild hair loss around the eye. Always blot away excess ointment from the skin gently.
  • Blurred vision: The thick ointment base may cause brief blurriness directly after application; monitor your dog so they don't bump into items.
  • Contraindications: Do not use Optimmune if your dog has an active viral or fungal eye infection, as suppressing the local immune system will worsen the infection.

Storage & Handling

  • Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
  • If the ointment liquefies in hot weather, place the tube in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes to firm it up. Do not store it there long-term, as the tube may crack.
  • Discard the tube one month (4 weeks) after opening to maintain sterility, as Optimmune® does not contain antimicrobial preservatives.

How to Apply Optimmune

  1. Clean the eye: Gently wipe away any excessive discharge or debris using a vet-approved, non-irritating eye flush solution.
  2. Prep the dose: Wear gloves to avoid absorbing the immunosuppressant medication through your skin. Squeeze the tube carefully from the bottom without rolling or folding it.
  3. Apply the strip: Pull down your dog's lower eyelid to create a pocket (conjunctival sac). Place a 1/4-inch (approx. 6mm) strip of ointment directly into the pocket or onto the cornea every 12 hours.
  4. Avoid contamination: Strictly do not touch the tube tip to your dog’s eye, eyelashes, or your fingers.
  5. Let them blink: Release the eyelid. Your dog's natural blinking motion will safely spread the lubricating ointment across the eye surface.
  6. Note on multi-medication timing: If your dog takes other eye drops, apply those first, then wait 5 to 10 minutes before applying Optimmune.
